X/OS Linux 5 Migration to CentOS 5

2008-08-25

Four years ago, X/OS released the first version of X/OS Linux. During those years, we've spend a considerable amount of time and effort into providing a high-quality rebuild of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux sources. This past year, however, while maintaining three releases in parallel, it became clear that the benefits to us as a company did not outweight the costs.

We therefore decided to provide a migration path for the existing X/OS Linux releases to CentOS, starting with X/OS Linux 5. This effectively means that updates are now taken from the CentOS repositories and that some packages, containing distribution-specific files like logo images, will be replaced by the CentOS versions.

Migration is done in two stages:

  • An update of the xos-release package is installed, adding an extra X/OS Linux repository to the yum configuration as well as the CentOS repositories;

  • Upon running yum again, the packages in the new X/OS Linux migration repository will pull in the relevant CentOS packages and remove most of the contents of some existing X/OS Linux specific packages, e.g. xos-logos. Furthermore, all other package updates will be taken from the CentOS repositories.

X/OS will continue to provide Linux products and services, including support and customization services for RHEL/CentOS. Our deep knowledge of enterprise Linux and Fedora will continue to ensure our ability to add value to projects using one of these distributions.
