The final release of X/OS Linux 4 is now scheduled for the first half of June to include important updates from RHEL4 Update 1 (U1).
With the U1 beta period ending May 18 and two or three weeks to go for its official release, the X/OS Team decided to postpone the final release of X/OS Linux 4 till June. The final release will include this major update, comprising more than 200 packages — roughly 18% of the entire distribution. The size and importance of U1, notably a newer kernel to fix serious memory issues and improved hardware support, are the primary reasons to delay the release.
In addition, the final release will include the Xfce lightweight desktop environment. Xfce uses significantly less resources than a full-fledged desktop environment such as Gnome or KDE. At the same time, Xfce is visually appealing and easy to use — making it an ideal choice for use on older, less-capable machines.
