We've received many inquiries regarding the release date of X/OS Linux 4 (XL4). A beta version of XL4 was distributed to a limited number of test sites, shortly after the release of RHEL4 in February. Since then, we've made significant changes to our automated build environment. Experience from the previous release and the updates was used to improve the generation process and further automate QA testing. In addition, the build environment now supports multiple architectures — enabling releases for processors other than x86 with fairly little extra effort.
There's much to be excited about the upcoming release of X/OS Linux 4. Highlights include kernel 2.6, SELinux and significant improvements for the desktop. The release for Intel x86 is planned in the first week of May, with AMD64 following very shortly. Like its predecessor, release 4 and its updates are free to download, use and redistribute. At the same time, support for release 3 will continue as promised — with updates available till 2010 (2012 for release 4).
